For adults, going back to school to earn a high school diploma can be a daunting idea.  While some adults may be shy about sitting through high school classes, often with much younger students, others may just not have the time to do so.  Jobs, children, and other responsibilities often are put before improving their position in life, and income, through gaining that high school diploma. 

Which is best?  A high school diploma, or a GED (Test of General Educational Development)? Students who take the GED exams must not be enrolled in or graduated from high school, must be over the age of sixteen, and must meet other state requirements.  A GED is awarded when a student passes a series of tests in five academic subjects. In order to pass each test, the student must score higher than 60% of the sample set of graduating seniors. Generally, students need to spend a considerable amount of time studying for the exams. Students are not required to take traditional courses in order to earn their GED. The examinations take seven hours and five minutes cumulatively. Students may need to take preparation courses in order to get ready for the exams. However, this is not mandatory.

Some prospective employers consider the GED inferior to an actual high school diploma. If a student goes on to earn a college degree, an employer may not even consider how he or she completed their high school education. Most community colleges will admit students who have received a GED. Individual universities have their own policies, but many accept students with a GED. However, there are some colleges who do not view it as equivalent to a high school diploma, especially if they require specialized courses of study for admittance. More often, a traditional diploma will be viewed as superior. The US Bureau of Labor statistics reports that High School Diploma holders will most likely earn more and are more likely to complete a college degree than a student who has only earned a GED certificate.
